Following the Society’s decision to undertake a major redesign and refurbishment of the Gardens of the Rose to reflect modern trends in gardening, Balston & Company were commissioned to produce a scheme to demonstrate the history of the rose and the use of the rose as a key shrub or climber in mixed planting schemes.
The layout was conceived to show the rose both close to and in mass plantings.
The dynamic layout of paths picked up the historical existence of a former pergola. This dynamism was echoed in the structural planting designed to provide a background to the roses.
