The Gardens in the Sky exhibit demonstrated some of the plants and techniques that could help bring greenery into the heart of Singapore City – both in public spaces and in domestic apartments. It was an abstract expression of such places rather than a specific balcony, wall or roof. This recognized the multiplicity of varied places and spaces where Skyrise greening would be appropriate.
It occupied a 10m square site and consisted of a central drum with an open roof penetrating an outer drum partly covered with a sloping roof visible from the ground.
Lit from the centre it gave the idea of sunlight and greenery as seen from inside buildings. The outer drum demonstrated vertical walls clothed in bromeliads, ferns and orchids, and the sloping roof was also covered in roofing plants. Floor level spaces were defined by large plants in pots.
