First established in 1983, Balston & Company currently employs five full-time professional staff together with support staff as required, experienced in the fields of architecture, landscape design, landscape planning, horticulture and garden management.
Although the heart of the business is the creative design of landscapes, gardens and their buildings, the company also carries out other related tasks such as Planning Exercises, Management and Costing Reviews where required, as well as Public Inquiries.
We are small company, thus guaranteeing a personal service, but selective in our workload ensuring the closest attention to each individual job. With the main office in Wiltshire and part of the team based in London, the complement tends to expand and contract with the current workload.
By the mid-1980’s the company was well-established with a wide range of work mostly in the UK and a few jobs abroad. They ranged from Show exhibits at the smallest and most intensive end of the scale, to large scale country parks and gardens. There was also a steady flow of urban work from roof gardens to the occasional public work such as projects in London, Bristol and Paris. Also a number of commercial projects were undertaken in Paris.
More recently the company has become involved with several substantial urban design projects in various parts of China. One of these being the design of a landscape masterplan for a 325 hectare Botanic Garden development, part of which was a 100 hectare site of Lavender Gardens and a 16 hectare Sports park, whereas another project comprised the design of a 26 hectare Urban Park situated alongside the shore of the Kalang River in Northern Xingjiang. Throughout the life of Balston & Company, the focus has always remained on design, although projects have become more diverse. Frequently we have formed part of a design consortium, involving planners, architects, ecologists, energy consultants, and sculptors. Our philosophy subscribes to flexibility and the use of concentrated expertise when required.
